Beijing Watchdog: Kazakh DJs, Police Punishment, New Bars and More

It's hard to believe March is already half over, but the weather confirms it: spring is on the way. As always there is tons of stuff happening in Beijing, from groovin' DJs to job fairs. Read on to find out more.

Notable news:

1) Flying bricks and punches (i.e. the CBA playoffs)
On March 11th the Beijing Ducks CBA basketball team was in Taiyuan playing the Shanxi Brave Dragons, for a place in the CBA playoff finals, when all hell broke loose. Confrontations on court soon spilled over to the riled up Shanxi fans who proceeded to pelt the Beijing players on court with water bottles. Even though Shanxi ended up winning and evening the best of five series 2-2, the confrontations continued when a Shanxi fan claimed Beijing's ex-NBA star Stephon Marbury punched and kicked him (a claim that Marbury has denied). The bus taking the Beijing team back to their hotel was subsequently surrounded by a mob of Shanxi fans, who grabbed everything available (including bricks, water bottles and stones) and bombarded the Beijing team bus.

In the aftermath, Shanxi was fined 60,000 RMB for their fans' misconduct, and the final showdown between the two teams in Beijing (which will decide who goes to the CBA finals) was moved from March 14th to March 18th. Go Ducks!

2) Erring police punished
Last year the Beijing police opened a hotline for citizens to air their grievances about the conduct of Beijing's city police. Over the last year, thousands of complaints were lodged and in early March, city officials revealed that 62 officers were punished for misconduct as a result. While the exact nature of the misconduct and punishments was not made clear, it seems to be a step in the right direction.
