Where to Find Shenzhen’s Tastiest Dim Sum

Who doesn't like dim sum? Really! Those little bite-sized Cantonese treats are well known around the world, and for good reason. Often referred to as the Chinese version of tapas, dim sum come in all shapes and sizes, from delicious shrimp dumplings served in bamboo steamers to rice-rolled noodles smothered in soy sauce, to pretty durian cakes served on cute paper doilies. Shenzhen, being located in the homeland of dim sum, Guangdong, is of course riddled with restaurants serving these mouth-watering little dishes; but which ones are actually good? Below are a few of the most popular dim sum restaurants amongst locals.

1) Daoxiang JiujiaView In Map
Daoxiang Jiujia (稻香酒家) is a very well known Cantonese restaurant chain with several branches in both Shenzhen and Guangzhou.  The restaurant is reputed for its wide selection of dim sum; their shrimp dumplings – fresh, juicy shrimps encased in a transparent dumpling wrapper – don't just look amazing, they taste amazing! Other must-try options include the shaomao, which is made using generous chunks of steamed shrimp and pork. Daoxiang Jiujia offers dim sum deals from Monday to Friday from early morning until 11:30, however there are usually epic long queues during this time, so make sure to get there early to enjoy the discounts.

Laurel Restaurant (丹桂轩) is a well known Cantonese restaurant in Shenzhen. They serve a huge selection of dim sum including all the standard dishes like fresh shrimp dumplings, rice noodles, steamed pork and shrimp dumplings and more. The portions here are rather small, especially for the price (average cost per person for one meal is 100 RMB), but the quality of the food makes up for it. The restaurant also boasts an impressive wine cellar and its lakeside location adds a nice touch, especially in the summer when outdoor seating is available.

King Harbour Restaurant (海皇渔港) is the place to go for an authentic Cantonese dining experience. This place is usually packed to the brim and noise levels may be a little overbearing for those used to peace and quiet when eating. However, as one of Shenzhen's most popular old-style restaurants, the dim sum selection is extensive and reasonably priced. Popular dishes include steamed pork and shrimp dumplings, durian cakes, mango pudding, steamed buns and spare ribs.

Besides its delicious menu and fresh ingredients, the restaurant boasts a great ambience and generous portion sizes. You can't go wrong with their selection of steamed dumplings, buns, custard tarts, rice noodles filled with pork and shrimp, shrimp wrapped in tofu skin, and lots, lots more.
