Get Your Caffeine Kick in Shenzhen's Cosiest Cafes
By Ellen Schliebitz , eChinacities.com

In terms of hot beverages, China was exclusively associated with tea culture for a long time. However, though still an avid tea-drinking nation, Chinese people certainly have begun to wake up and smell the coffee in recent years. Not so long ago finding even instant Nestle coffee granules in China’s more remote cities was considered an arduous task. As a nation of 1.3 billion people, influenced by the West’s prosperity, has begun to adapt a passion for coffee’s burgeoning culture, countless top quality cafes have sprung up in all corners of this changing country. It’s all too easy to stumble into a Starbucks in any one of China’s major cities, especially here in Shenzhen, but it’s the little independent cafes that possess the real charm and magic. However, independent cafes are fairly hard to find in Shenzhen as the majority are international chain cafes. Below we’ve attempted to trace some of the cosiest and best independent cafes in Shenzhen.

92 Degrees Cafe 92℃咖啡馆
This cafe has been an iconic fixture in Shenzhen’s coffee scene since 2003. Located on Nanyuan Lu at the border of Luohu and Futian Districts, the cafe is dimly lit, with solid timber floors, long windows, high ceilings, old movie posters and hanging drapes. The cafe has an overall European feel that even boasts over 3000 American and European books and magazines, all available for browsing. There’s also free wireless internet which makes this venue the perfect spot for an afternoon of lounging. The coffee is also decent, but the main pull of this cafe is the fact that it almost encourages you to spend a long afternoon there. Besides the coffee, 92 Degrees also boasts a complete lunch and dinner menu, serving anything from soups, spaghetti to desserts. The homemade tiramisu (approx. 18 RMB) is the perfect accompaniment to the coffee.

If you’re the type of person who likes to be surrounded by a large collection of books while drinking coffee, then this place is right for you. Though Material Life Book Bar only stocks a limited collection of English language magazines and no English books, it is still a great place to enjoy a coffee in a relaxing, quiet, chilled-out setting. Bring your own book, sit back and enjoy a strong cup of coffee with the venue’s other coffee connoisseurs/book worms.
