So called Southern products don’t just include Cantonese stuff, but also Shanghai foods as well. This area is where you will find the finest collection of these kinds of eateries in the whole of Shanghai, that is to say on the Nanjing Road. Just a whiff of the sugared candies and cakes is enough to have most Chinese people be transported back to the happy days of their childhood. There is no pressure to buy, and just strolling around and window shopping is fun.

One of the longest running traditional old Shanghai stores is San Yang Sheng (三阳盛南货店) and it is the perfect place to pick up everything from yummy snacks, to an exquisitely crafted celebration cake. Another hot recommendation for anyone with a sweet tooth and some time to browse Nanjing Road for cakes, try out Shao Wan Sheng (邵万生南货店).

Heping Guandi No. 2 和平官邸2号View In Map

It could be argued that this place has the best courtyard location in the whole of Shanghai. It is pretty hard to find, being tucked out of the way in a small and quiet concession era alleyway. The door is very simple and blends in with the rest of the street, not to mention the lack of any sign for the restaurant.

However, once inside you enter another world. A beautiful garden and model mountain scene unfolds before your eyes. Not only does this place have some of the most beautifully produced Jiangnan/Shanghai cuisine that money can buy, but a meal here is the whole landscaped courtyard experience. All very relaxing and very Southern Chinese.

Cang Le Fang (House of Hidden Treasures) 藏乐坊View In Map

This place is the antithesis of the hustle and bustle of the city outside. With a massive green lawn and relaxing natural wood paneling, lit by discreet and classy old fashioned lamps, this restaurant is the height of pleasant eating and good service. With classic southern dishes and afternoon tea served all day long, the emphasis here is a slow pace of life. The perfect cure for a hectic day in Shanghai.

Shi Le (Ten Happiness) 十乐View In Map

This place has nutrition as its central philosophy. Designed by a famous Japanese architect, the restaurant uses wood and stone in the setting of a Chinese mansion house to create a colorful and natural environment.

Enjoy a quiet meal with a couple of good friends while taking in the sumptuously designed ‘birds’ nest’ style wood paneling interior or the beautifully crafted landscape garden exterior. Another plus is that they promise they keep oil, salt and sugar to a minimum and never add MSG or food coloring.
