Shanghai’s latest go-to street has been rising in our estimations for the past few months. Now home to bakeries, cafés, galleries, and even a fish and chip shop, Yongkang Lu deserves a visit if you haven’t been yet. Stretching between Taiyuan Lu, Jiashan Lu and Xiangyang Lu, this narrow street was known as Route Rémi during the Concession era. It was named after the first French wine merchant to build a warehouse in Shanghai in 1848, and its French tradition continues in the bars and restaurants that have recently set up shop there.

Yongkang Lu is a hive of activity these days. Here are some of the venues you shouldn’t miss.

This drinks delivery firm now has a second branch in Jing’an building on the success of the original here on Yongkang. They specialise in cheap but good quality drinks delivered to your door, and have a decent selection of imported beer.

2) Les Garcons Boucher View In Map
If you miss decent quality meat and can’t face another Yurun frankfurter, the guys at Les Garcons Boucher have just what you’re looking for. They import their meat from abroad, but don’t charge exorbitant prices for the privilege. Stop by for cheese and bread too.

3) Sailors Fish and Chips View In Map
We can’t believe it’s taken this long for an authentic fish and chip shop to open, but we’re glad it finally happened. Three Fudan graduates saw the gap in the market, and dropped anchor on Yongkang with Sailors. Expect fresh white fish and crispy batter, plus tasty chips and mushy peas.

4) Shikumen Family Museum View In Map
There’s plenty of history to be found on this little street, and the Shikumen Family Museum is a good place to start. Call ahead to book a viewing, and Da Shiping will show you around his own personal shikumen, imparting tales of Old Shanghai. Admission is free.

5) Just Grapes View In Map
Every street worth its salt has a branch of Just Grapes these days, and Yongkang is no exception. It’s the same formula: a wide range of imported bottles for sale, plus a few tables to enjoy wines by the glass.

6) Pizza Peppone View In Map
The people behind Le Saleya have fallen in love with Yongkang Lu, and this pizzeria is their fourth endeavour here. It’s still in its infancy, but already has the hallmarks of a great restaurant.

7) Le Café Stagiaires View In Map
Another venue from the Saleya crew, this cosy but vibrant café has a great daily happy hour between 16:00 and 20:00, with house wine going for 20 RMB a glass. Free wifi and cheap coffee make it ideal for daytime trips too.
