In addition to its gluttony of dive bars and dance clubs, Shanghai is actually a great place for more cultured endeavors. Whether it’s literature, art, theatre, or film, you can find it all here, along with a like-minded group of people with whom to share the experiences. There is strong group of film buffs in Shanghai, resulting in a plethora of viewing choices. Serious films, foreign films, cult classic films – whatever your taste, you’re bound to find a Shanghai club to match.

This Swiss lodge-style bar may be known more for its cheap happy hour and random location than its movie showings on Sunday afternoons, but there is no doubt it has a loyal following. DadaView In Map
Everyone’s favourite dive bar (at least now that LOgO is gone) ramps up the cheesiness factor with their selection of cult classics that (almost) everyone knows and loves. Movies begin at 21:00 and are generally shown in Chinese with English subtitles. And as always, entry is free!

Boxing Cat View In Map
Boxing Cat (Fuxing Lu location) sets the bar a bit higher by showing not just one, not two, but three movies during their Wednesday movie nights. Cult classics are their specialty, all shown on a big screen and served with complimentary popcorn. Entry is completely free and things get started around 21:00 – so get there early for a good seat.

Focus CoffeeView In Map
Open to people of every sexual orientation, Focus Coffee hosts a LGBT Movie Night every Wednesday in conjunction with their usual “mingling” night. Between these two events, you’re bound to meet new people and have a memorable night. Feel free to bring your own movies, or choose from the ones that are already provided. The whole event typically runs from 20:00-24:00.

Vienna Cafe classes things up a bit by showing a range of international films that are sure to spark intense discussion. Jameson Movie Club
The Jameson Movie Club is hosted by Jameson Studios and encourages everyone who loves movies to join in the fun every other Sunday. The club seems to show a wide variety of movie genres, screening anything from art house films to blockbusters. The location of the club varies, but mostly favours Cotton’s (Anting Lu location) and The Apartment. Entry is free and includes a tub of popcorn, so check out their website for dates, locations and movie listings.

With an aim towards building a French community with native speakers or simply those who want to learn, their movie choices vary from indie to classic, but are always shown in French (usually with Chinese subtitles). Entry is free and movies begin at 16:00.
