Up until a few years ago, Tsingtao was pretty much the only reasonable beer on tap in Shanghai. Now, thanks to many beer aficionados turned bar owners, the city is swimming in a sea of frothy hops imported from beer capitals around the world (we’re looking at you, Belgium). Even a handful of microbreweries have popped up around town, which just goes to show that there’s never been a better time to order a pint of the good stuff in Shanghai.

Boxing Cat Brewery, Fuxing Xilu

1) Boxing Cat Brewery
Microbrewery Boxing Cat always has at least four beers brewing in their giant copper vats at any given time. With three locations and seasonal pours, Boxing Cat is definitely a favorite for the city’s beer drinkers – the bar food from the American South goes down real nice too.

If it’s rare and expensive Belgian beers you’re after, Kaiba’s two locations have you covered. These neighborhood bars offer more than 65 imported beers (50 of which come straight from Belgium), and their Dingxi Lu location has the best deal on all-you-can-eat mussels every Tuesday. This intimate watering hole is one of Shanghai’s best-kept secrets and has recently expanded from three seats to an entire room that doubles as a front for Jackie, the beer distributor. A variety of imported beers are on hand (over 60 the last time we checked), and Jackie is always ready with a recommendation – the only problem is the opening hours, which are irregular at best.

4) Paulaner Brauhaus 宝莱纳餐厅
Chain bars and restaurants aren’t usually a good thing, but in the case of Paulaner, we’re glad the Germans exported the corporate-owned brewhouse to Shanghai and have built up three locations around town. Paulaner is known for its beers as much as its live music and massive meals of old Bavaria, but all those steins you’ll be knocking back in the beer hall come with a hefty price tag.

A welcome alternative from the champagne-laden bars and lounges that line the Huangpu River, Bund Brewery is a relaxing pub with beers brewed onsite – and it’s a heck of a lot lighter on the wallet too. Choose from the home-brewed lager, wheat or dark, which have been around since 1998. That’s practically a lifetime in Shanghai.

6) Southern Barbarian
Well-known for serving up some of the city’s best homestyle Yunnan cuisine, Southern Barbarian also has an impressive beer selection. With over 70 varieties at its original location in Puxi and 20 more added to the drink list at its new Pudong restaurant, this may very well be the most extensive beer menu in town. Turns out, beer goes well with fried honeybees and grilled goat cheese.

Beer selections at dive bars don’t normally wow the masses, but Beaver’s been serving up the cheapest variety of bottled suds in the city for years, and they’ve got the bathroom wallpaper to prove it. Raucous 80s music and a popular foosball table only add to the frathouse ambience - it’s one of the few places you can get away with saying “Brewskis”.
