Health Food Stores in Shanghai

Health Food Stores in Shanghai
By Andrea Scarlatelli , eChinacities.com

Shanghai may be the place to go for swanky bars and haute cuisine, but when it comes to healthy, organic food – eh, not so much. The now defunct Ostore that opened way back in 2006 (and promptly closed due to an underperformance that was largely blamed on its high prices and inconvenient location) appeared to simply be ahead of its time. Fast forward to 2010, and Shanghai still hasn’t improved much in the way of organic health food stores. That being said, there are options for those of us in Shanghai who want healthy alternatives. So whether they’re already here, only on the web, or under construction, here’s a rundown of the best health food stores in Shanghai.

Fields ChinaView In Map
You’ve most likely already heard of Fields China, as they provide ingredients for the El Willy empire. Their online store offers one of the widest selections on this list. In addition to organic groceries (like meat, dairy, seafood, and produce), they also focus on things for the family, like organic baby food and formula. If ordering online isn’t your thing, just drop by El Willy’s every Saturday between 11:00am and 4:00pm to browse the selection.

GL Japan PlazaView In Map
One of the few physical buildings in which you can walk in and find organic items, GL Japan Plaza specializes in premade Japanese dishes. However, you can also find a great selection of organic produce there (although your guess is as good as mine as to whether the meats and fish are organic – I’ve gotten a different answer every time I’ve gone). And while it’s not in the most convenient location, it’s a great place to get inspiration for Japanese cooking with organic products.

QQ Mushroom
The specialty store to end all specialty stores, this online shop only sells everyone’s favorite fungus. That’s right – mushrooms! Whether you choose to order fresh, wild mushrooms or farm-raised ones, the selection on QQ Mushroom’s site is jaw-dropping. They get all their products from “the mountains of Yunnan” and offer every type of mushroom you’ve ever heard of (and a lot you haven’t), from black truffles to quilted green russulas to spring morels (amazing in omelets!). Let the experimentation begin!

Organic Farm
This online shop guarantees that all their products are 100% certified organic, from their food (including free-range eggs) to their baby products to their drinks. My favorite part about it is their organic cosmetics line, which is great for ladies with sensitive skin. While orders are only taken online, Organic Farm delivers (free!) straight to your home on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 8:00 and 18:00. You can even specify what time you’d like them to stop by with your loot.

World Health Store
Largely a vitamin and supplement shop, this store also offers a selection of organic and gluten-free products, such as noodles, juices, coffees, and butters. It’s an especially great place to pick up those alternative sweeteners that are wicked hard to find here in Shanghai. While they currently are only located in Beijing, World Health Store is in the process of building a store here in Shanghai as we speak. So keep an eye out when the store pops up next year – in the meantime, you can always take a look at their offerings online.

Address: Currently online only (Shanghai store coming soon)
