Guinness Galore: Shanghai’s Top Irish Pubs

Guinness Galore: Shanghai’s Top Irish Pubs

While the number of Irish pubs may be surprisingly scarce in this city, you will be happy to learn that it is simply a case of quality over quantity. From family-friendly outings in Pudong to rowdy twenty-somethings in Puxi, there is Guinness enough for everyone. So whether you are Irish year round or for just one day a year, here are the pubs that will make you feel right at home.

1) The Blarney Stone
Tucked along the quaint section of Dongping Lu, The Blarney Stone can be all too easy to miss if you’re not watching out for it. But step inside its cozy (never call it cramped!) interior and you’ll wonder how you walked on by. Set up exactly the way a good Irish pub should be, with plenty of stone and low lighting, it certainly projects a rough and tumble, almost earthy feel. Guinness is just one of the many beers they have on tap, and you can be assured that it is poured correctly every time. Brews tend toward the pricier range, from 50-80 RMB, but that never seems to stop the rowdy crowds of rugby players and businessmen alike from sidling up to the bar and throwing a few back.

2) The Irishman’s Pub
Anyone who says that Irish pubs are no place for children should definitely stop by The Irishman’s Pub, a fun yet non-threatening experience for those who only want to dip their toes in the Irish experience. Housed in Pudong’s famed Thumb Plaza, the menu features traditional favourites, along with an impressive variety of beer. It’s a great place to relax and grab a game of pool with friends (the table is rarely crowded), especially if you’re tired of the wimpy drinks found in many Shanghai bars. While the soft rock music playing in the background may leave you a little confused as to where this place’s loyalty lies, rest assured that The Irishman’s Pub is a solid choice for both food and drink.

3) O’Malleys
Practically a Shanghai institution, O’Malleys has that rare distinction of being known as a family friendly outing spot (just check out the playground equipment in the front patio area!) and a damn fine place to grab a pint. Not to mention its reputation as one of the best places to watch any and all sports – they have a giant projector screen set up in the indoor/outdoor seating area, and the front yard practically became a stadium when the World Cup came around. Housed in what looks like an old mansion, its spacious floor plan and multi story layout makes it ideal for giant parties. It still manages to maintain its intimate feel, however, in large part because of the warm woods and stained glass that line the inside.

4) The Flying Fox
Pudong’s other favourite Irish pub, The Flying Fox serves up traditional hearty Irish and British fare, such as shephard’s pie, in a cozy – and distinctly quiet – environment. The peaceful outdoor patio area contrasts nicely with the more rustic indoor environment, which includes a foosball table, random Irish history tidbits, and plenty of beer advertisements. Prices are a little on the steep side – for example, fish and chips will run you around 120 RMB – but if you happen to live in Pudong, that’s pretty much the story of your life. And there must be something about Irish pubs that scream “family outings,” because you’ll find a kids’ play area on the first floor that is ideal for letting mom and dad have a little pint and some relaxation.
