If there is one thing that makes people feel alive, it's stuffing their faces full of pounds of hamburgers or gulping 12 beers in two hours. The thrill of the competition, the roars of the crowd, the love and adoration of fans. While Shanghai is nowhere near close the obscene amount of eating challenges that America holds within its borders (thanks Man vs. Food!), there still is ample opportunity to gorge your gluttonous gullets in our fair city. Of course, anyone can create their own eating challenge, due to the fact that there is no shortage of Teppenyaki and buffet places serving all you can eat smorgasbords of regret, but few places have "official" challenges to test the might of customers. Here are some of our favourites, it's time to throw reason out the window!

1) Blue Frog "100 shots challenge"
Popular western-style chain Blue Frog has one of the most daunting challenges on the list due to sheer quantity of alcohol consumed. The one saving grace in this challenge is the fact that you have an unlimited time to complete the challenge, so virtually anyone can finish it. Of course, it is impossible to finish all 100 shots in a sitting without rushing to the hospital – the shots are a wide variety of strong and sugary concoctions just itching to send someone into diabetic shock. At any of the Blue Frog's locations they have a card to keep track of all the shots you have consumed.

The thing about this challenge is that once you complete it you don't get all the shots for free. So, grand total, you're looking at about 2,600 RMB for the whole she-bang. A small price to pay for immortality. Once you have successfully completed this Herculean task, you will be put up on the "100 shots wall of glory" and a whole bevy of other goods – including three glasses, a shirt, and a free shot every time you go to Blue Frog – will be yours! As if you needed any more shots of alcohol.

2) Bistro Burger's "belt buster challenge"
There is nothing that is so uniquely Chinese as eating a 600 gram hamburger stacked high with beef, a fried egg, bacon, mozzarella, blue cheese and grilled onions, among other heart-clogging toppings. Shanghai burger-joint staple Bistro Burger is challenging guests to consume the aforementioned burger with fries and your choice of a milkshake or a beer in under 20 minutes. If you are able to accomplish this daunting challenge in the allotted time, you will get your name on Bistro Burger's Wall of Fame, a coupon for free food and drink the next time you visit, and a free t-shirt. Amount of food isn't quite as daunting as the others on this list, so if you're new to masochistic tummy stretching, this may be your best bet. The difficult part though is how fast you have to eat the food. You're consuming quite a bit of calories per minute once you run the numbers. So, keep that in mind when you take on this Belt Buster monster.

3) The COOK's "five-man mega Laksa challenge" at Kerry Hotel
For such an upstanding establishment, it's a bit surprising to find one of Shanghai's most difficult eating challenges within the hallowed walls of the Kerry Hotel. Proving that huge burgers aren't the only thing that can be spun into an eating challenge, The COOK is COOKing up one massively huge bowl of Laksa, which according to Dr. Wikipedia, is a huge bowl of noodles and soup popular around many of the island countries in Southeast Asia. The challenge is eating a huge bowl of noodles with a wide variety of toppings, including chicken, shrimp, and eggs. All told, you're looking at around four and a half pounds of edibles. So, you may have to fast for a few days before you try this one out. If you can finish the task you will get your meal for free (188 RMB plus a surcharge if you fail miserably), and your name on the wall of fame (noticing a trend yet?).

4) Boxing Cat's "12 beer challenge"
Perhaps one of Shanghai's most famous (and daunting) drinking Challenges, expat staple Boxing Cat Brewery is challenging customers to consume 12 beers in two hours. That makes a beer every ten minutes for two hours. The task seems fairly straightforward, and everyone who has attempted the challenge has their own suggestions as to how to accomplish such an obscene task. Your best bet? Let the beers warm up and make frequent trips to the bathroom, which, by the way, are chaperoned so you don't cheat and throw up all the beer. If you fail, and to be frank, most people do, you are charged the cost of all the beers you drank at 35 RMB a pop. Impossible? Nope. Difficult? You bet! If you are able to finish all 12 beers within the time you will live forever on the Boxing Cat's Wall of Fame. Glory is sweetest pint of all, my friends. Also, the challenge is open at all Boxing Cat locations.
