Expo Transport: Getting to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Site

So you’ve managed to buy a ticket for the Expo, booked a hotel, packed your bags, hopped onto a plane or train and arrived slap bang in the middle of Shanghai. Then what? Unless you just happen to see the Expo site from the window of your lodgings, you’re going to need to know how to navigate your way around Shanghai to get to the site. For those new to the city, this needn’t be a source of anxiety. Expo organizers have been placing great emphasis on providing excellent, user-friendly public transport directly to the Expo site, and with over 4000 special Expo taxis on the road, as well as special buses, metro lines and ferries, getting there should be easy and relatively hassle free. Below are some tips on how to get to the 2010 Shanghai Expo site from various locations and what means of public transport are available during the event.

Metro from Shanghai South Train Station 上海南站
For those arriving at Shanghai South Train Station, take metro line 1 (towards Fujin Lu 富锦路 direction). Transfer lines at Changshu Lu station (常熟路), changing to line 7 (Huamu 花木路 direction). Get off and exit at Yaohua Lu station (耀华路). Yaohua Lu station is right by the largest entrance and exit of the Shanghai Expo site. Once you exit the station, you’ll immediately see the large, red, China Pavilion and main entrance.

Metro from Shanghai Railway Station 上海火车站
Take metro line 1 at Shanghai Railway Station (Xin Zhuang 莘庄 direction) as far as People’s Square station (人民广场). From here, change to line 8 (Aerospace Museum 航天博物馆direction) and get off at Yaohua Lu ((耀华路)) station, as mentioned above.

Special Orbital Bus routes
Five orbital bus routes will take passengers to and from the Shanghai Expo site. These are bus numbers 4, 6, 7, 8 and 13. A free shuttle service will be available at stations slightly further from the site entrance. In order to ensure that all people leave the site on time at night, all regular Shanghai orbital bus lines will operate until at least 22:30, while the five expo lines will operate until 24:00. Among the five Expo bus routes, bus no. 7 and 13 arrive directly at the Expo site.

Other special direct bus routes
Besides the orbital bus routes, the Expo site will also be served by 16 direct bus lines to the three main entrances of the Pudong Expo site. Moreover, 90 regular bus lines also go to the surrounding areas of the Expo site.

Subway Line 13 (a.k.a. “Expo Line”)
Metro Line 13 is commonly referred to as the “Expo line”, as it was specifically built for the Expo. Passengers with Expo entrance tickets can take the line free of charge. During the Expo, only three stations of line 13 will be open, namely Madang Lu (马当路), Lupu Bridge (卢浦大桥) and Expo Avenue (世博园) – all of which are extremely close to the site.

Expo taxis
Visitors wishing to reach the Expo site by taxi are advised to take the special Expo taxis, as opposed to the regular ones. For security reasons, regular taxis and private cars must stop 1.5 kilometres from the Expo site before 21:00. However, Expo taxis can enter the site at any time. Regular taxis are only allowed into the site after 21:00.

Ferries
The Expo site will also be accessible by ferry and water lines. A total of 5 ferry routes will be available to carry passengers to the site throughout the event. 35 ferries are expected to operate 600 services per day. The ferry will run from 08:00 to 24:00, longer than the Expo stays open. Ferry stations are located at Qichangzhan station (其昌栈), Qinhuangdao Lu (秦皇岛路), Shiliupu (十六铺) that are accessible for groups only, while Dongchang Lu (东昌路) is accessible for individuals. Ferries run every 20 to 40 minutes.
