Shanghai Is Monitoring Radio Frequencies Near Gaokao Test Sites to Prevent Cheating

Shanghai is monitoring radio frequencies around gaokao test sites in a crackdown on organized cheating. An official from the Shanghai Radio Administration Bureau said that there are 14 fixed monitoring stations in different areas of the city, and 34 units with hand-held frequency monitoring devices will sweep areas near test sites.

On June 7, at one test site, workers from the Shanghai Radio Administration Bureau set up shop in a parking lot in Xuhui and used hand-held portable monitoring equipment to look for abnormal signals near the school gate.

The official from the Shanghai Radio Administration Bureau said that the organization had not found any abnormal signals so far. If an abnormal transmission is found, officials will interfere with the signal and block the cheating attempt. Parents watching the workers test the area said that the monitoring was necessary to prevent cheating and give all candidates a fair chance.

An amendment to China’s criminal law implemented in November states stipulated strict punishments for organized cheating during national exams, using equipment to cheat, providing help to others, selling test questions or answers, and taking a national exam for someone else.
