Guilin “5,000 RMB Fish Restaurant” Suspends Business after Price Gouging Scandal

The Guilin Trade and Industry Bureau and local Food and Drug Administration have launched an investigation into price gouging in the city after a recent incident in which a tourist was taken advantage of.

A woman named Wang was ripped off in a Guilin seafood restaurant after she asked staff to recommend and fish for her. Staff picked out a Chinese giant salamander, priced at 1,500 RMB per jin. The fish weighed slightly over three jin and cost 5,000 RMB. She called the police, who mediated the situation. Wang agreed to pay 1,500 RMB for the meal.

In response to the incident, Guilin Municipal Propaganda Department organized a large joint investigation with a number of local departments into price gouging. This past Wednesday, the Trade and Industry Bureau and Food and Drug Administration announced that the restaurant that had cheating the woman had been ordered to suspend its business for further investigation. Price gouging in Guilin is punishable by a maximum fine of 500,000 Yuan.

They buy the giant salamanders from breeders. Research it and you will see that there are many farms that breed these like the turtles.
