Canadian Citizen Kevin Garratt Indicted for Spying, Stealing State Secrets

Canadian citizen Kevin Garratt who was detained in China for over a year has been indicted on accusations of illegal spying and stealing state secrets. Garratt was prosecuted in Dandong, Liaoning.

Xinhua reported that Garratt is suspected of working with “Canadian espionage agencies to gather intelligence in China.”

Garratt and his wife Julia were detained in August 2014 on suspicion of stealing state secrets. Dandong’s National Security Agency had begun surveilling the couple on August 4, 2014. Julia was released on bail in February 2015.

Garratt’s case will be tried at the Dandong People’s Intermediate Court.
