Tour Guide Arrested in Hainan after Ripping Off Japanese Tourist
Nov 18, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A Hainan tour guide was discovered to be a fraud after they were investigated for ripping off a female Japanese tourist. While in Shanghai, the tourist had purchased a travel voucher for a five day, four night VIP stay in Hainan. The package had been advertised as 380 Yuan for 2760 Yuan worth of “high quality tourism.”

When the tourist arrived in Hainan in October, they were unexpectedly asked for another 380 Yuan. Then a tour guide named Li asked them for 900 Yuan.

The tour guide, Li, was taken into custody in early November by Haikou police after an investigation. Li was arrested while leading a tour in Sanya on November 14.

It turns out that Li’s name is actually Cai Xiang. Cai confessed to operating tours with a forged tour guide license and that they would offer fake VIP tours and charge an extra 900 Yuan once tourists were on the island. Cai was sentenced to 15 days administrative detention for using forged documents.

It will be a long time before I visit Hainan. I have no idea what it is like down there and my host family is from the island. All they manage to tell me about it is that the locals are only interested in stealing and ripping off tourists. The story I hear the most is the visitor approaches a restaurant. He asks, "How much is that fish?" The boss grabs the fish, kills it, and then says, "1,000 rmb." The man says, "No!" of course to which the boss demands payment and will even call the police, who will take the locals side undoubtedly.

The-Final-Say

This is strange. Last week we read about a guy who got jailed and fined 1000RMB for stealing so little money. Meanwhile, this person also stole, albiet a scam, and 15 days detention for using a fake license? Does this mean that if a thief has a fake license to steal, he can get a noodle slap of 15 days administrative detention? Like the thief, throw the book at this person. Otherwise that one will be back on the streets soon doing it all over again. I wouldn't be surprised if her partner is already updating the next web advertisement as we read this, waiting for the next tour to commence in 15 days.

Oh come on, you don't buy his story that he thought he was shooting at a burglar hiding in the toilet? Seriously, that group must be the dumbest on Earth. But wouldn't you know when I talked about this case with with my adults students 2 years ago, they all believed his explanation to be true.
