In the latest case of Chinese passengers vs. airport security, a man was fined 1,500 Yuan for trying to smuggle a lighter past security inside one of his socks.

The man, surnamed Cao, was on his way to board a China Eastern flight to Yinchuan from Beijing Capital Airport on August 25.

He was caught by security and given an administrative fine of 1,500 Yuan. Beijing Capital Airport police said that punishments have been increased during the World Athletic Championships and September 3 military parade.

A heavy smoker, Cao told police that he was worried about finding a lighter as soon as he arrived in Yinchuan to have a post-flight cigarette.

Because he had to deal with airport police, Cao missed his flight.

Police said that if passengers have a lighter in their bag or pocket, it is generally just confiscated and the passenger is not fined. However, hiding a lighter in a sock makes it seem like a passenger is sneaking it on the plane on purpose. Lighters were hidden in this manner in the past in cases where passengers tried to set fires on the plane.
