Lies! Beijing 50M Broadband Internet Actually Only 10M
Apr 17, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A Beijing News sleuth reporter recently figured out that his 50M bandwidth broadband home internet was actually only about 10M bandwidth. Basically, it was way slower than what he paid for. The reporter tested the bandwidth speed using two different types of software three times each. The first was an internet speed testing website called 360. 360's three tests put his bandwidth at 1.52 MB, 1.37 MB and 1.42 MB. For the second test, he used a software called Thunder, which calculated his bandwidth at 1.69 MB, 1.75 MB and 1.79 MB in three tests.

360 engineer Ding Zhen told the reporter that, “according to the software tests, your home network's bandwidth is equivalent to about 10M.” Looks like you can get ripped off buying just about anything these days!

I have exactly the same issues in Shenzhen, with a 100M fibre connection, when installed the speeds were close to the 100M offered allowing for wifi, routers etc the speeds were as expected, we were one of the first to sign to the service. Now into our second year the speeds have dropped considerably to around 1/7 of the initial service speeds so as RiriRiri rightly points out 1/5 ration isn't the worst and you do have to read the small print there's pretty much zero recourse with your ISP My advice ignore the advertised speeds and vote with your feet, shop for the best ISP you can get typically the best of a bad lot - Sadly the bottom line here is yes, nothing is sacred in China, fair advertising? No such thing! you can most certainly get ripped off buying anything, in my experience never a case of whether you are being ripped off just a case of how much, except it and move on China is the land of contradiction we have the best and worst of everything here

Most likely someone didn't read the fine prints on their contract. 50M Internet means 50M maximum. Standard practice for ISPs in and out of China and 1/5 isn't the worst ratio I've seen.

From personal experience I discovered that although your ISP may send you a certain bandwidth, if the equipment in your district or apartment complex isn't able to handle it, you will only get what it can handle. Although some new apartments have broadband capability, the nodes nearby may not have the same specs. Hint: check what bandwidth your apartment is able to receive before signing up for the latest package.
