A man whose wife has been missing for over 10 years discovered that he wasn’t actually married, and that the marriage certificate was a fake after he tried to make arrangements to get married for a second time.
The man, surnamed Chen, discovered the troubling news when he went to the court to get his documents for re-marriage. He had met Xie over ten years ago, through a mutual friend and they decided to get married despite not knowing each other for that long.
When it came to the bureaucratic stuff, Xie said that it was too much bother to go to the courthouse and that her ‘friend’ could do the certificate for them. Two months after they were ‘married’, Xie left to go to her hometown and never returned. Since then, Chen has heard nothing from her.
Over the next ten years, many matchmakers enthusiastically offered to set him up, but seeing as he couldn’t locate his ‘wife’, he rejected the offers as he believed his situation was too unstable.
In 2014 he met a woman surnamed Li, by chance. The two got to know each other and fell in love and Chen decided to re-marry at last.
However, when he went to file for divorce he was told that his marriage certificate had never been officially notarized and he was in fact listed as single- which in the end, turned out to be good news as he is now free to marry Li.
And the lesson to be learned from all this? Don’t get random friends to process your official documents for you or marry people you don’t really know.
