French Artist Julien Malland Paints Beautiful Graffiti on Demolished Shikumen
Jan 23, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A French artist in Shanghai has painted pictures all over demolished houses in the Shikumen area of Shanghai, transforming a construction site into a thing of beauty.

Parisian graffiti artist Julien Malland became well known on the Paris scene in the 90’s for his character-based works in the 20th arrondissement. He has worked in various sites around Shanghai since his arrival, some of which have been removed by authorities.

This latest work depicts poignant scenes of Chinese children, giving the impression that they are playing amongst the rubble. Many of the children are clutching onto houses or displaying the character 拆, meaning demolish, suggesting that they are mourning the destruction of their homes.

A full gallery of the paintings can be seen here.

Great work which will hopefully inspire thought rather than just being a "tourist attraction". Does anyone know exactly where these are, i.e. the street name? Many thanks!

They were in the Jingan district. Most if not all are torn down by the authorities by now. You can see them in this article, including the 'highly evolved' reason given by CCP for their destruction. www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1692191/shanghai-authorities-criticised-destroying-display-street-art-derelict

An observant artist highlighting what happened to the best of traditional china, in today's china ---- a corpse-like girl wearing traditional chinese costume, hugging a book, lying amidst a pile of rubble (literally and figuratively). Malland nailed it, bravo.

The original news has been quickly buried and replaced by this http://news.qq.com/a/20150123/022799.htm#p=1. This version, emphasizing random attention cravers with zero extra artistic value, obfuscates the original artists' credentials until page 6. Comments hardly make any mention of whatever the message was to begin with. So dear artist, here's your gratitude from China, and surely some inspiration for your next stunt.
