Liu Gang, host of CCTV’s World Village program was embroiled in a scandal when an employee of a hotel he was staying at committed suicide after he complained that some of his cash was stolen during his stay.

According to the popular host’s Weibo page, several of his crew had money go missing whilst staying at the Ruihai International Hot Springs Resort in Yishui County, Shandong Province.

His Weibo post read: “To all friends planning to travel to Yishui County, don’t stay at @RuihaiInternationalHotSpringsResort, our whole crew stayed there for 3 days, five of whom had money stolen, an average of 1,000 RMB each. We’ve already reported it and have demanded to see surveillance footage but the hotel management has refused to cooperate!”

After he trashed the hotel on Weibo, his agent, whose number is listed on Liu Gang’s Weibo page began receiving angry phone calls and texts, all from Yishui County registered numbers; apparently, after Liu Gang called for an investigation, several of the hotel employees were called down to the police station to make statements. Among them was one local female employee, who, instead of going to the police station to make a statement, went on to commit suicide by ingesting pesticides.

The reason for her suicide wasn’t reported but local residents clearly felt that Liu Gang was to blame. The hotel described the employee as a ‘well loved mother of two girls who was excellent at her job’. Whether or not she had anything to do with the missing money has not been reported.

Yeah I noticed that a lot of Chinese tourists often lack basic safety knowledge, making them easy targets.
