Guangxi Official Dies of Alchohol Poisoning on First Day at Work

We’ve all had one of those days where you don’t know when to say no, but a raucous lunch ended in tragedy in Guangxi when a deputy county chief died from alcohol poisoning after drinking with colleagues on his first day.

The South China Morning Post reported that Zhong Xiefei came home after work inebriated after his boozy baijiu-fuelled lunch, but his family saw nothing amiss when they checked on him sleeping and snoring loudly.

He was found dead the next morning around 6 am

The seven other officials who drank with him at the meal have since been fired, with district officials meeting on Monday to try and work out how to best deal with the incident.

One of the key focuses of Xi Jinping’s administration is reducing officials’ excesses and lavish lifestyle and there has been a conscious effort to discourage this kind of excessive drinking. Despite the campaign, drinking remains very much an important ritual at official meals, however the National Bureau recently released some ‘encouraging’ data that showed county level officials on average only attended 12 banquets per year, down from last year’s 18.
