Editor’s note: This translated article introduces us to the results of a survey conducted by MyCOS educational survey company. The survey looked at the attitudes of university students in regards to love, sex and marriage. While many of the results are what you would expect, some may surprise you.

MyCOS educational survey company published an investigation on the concept of marriage amongst university students. The survey was distributed in February and the company received 2,012 responses. The survey shows that many parents, especially parents of female students, are more and more supportive of the idea of their children dating while in university. The idea of university in general has also changed; it has become a recognised milestone in children lives, as more parents attach the same importance to it as they do to marriage.

70 percent of college students have experienced love

About 70 percent of college students surveyed reported that they had experienced love (70 percent of male students and 67 percent of female students) and about 40 percent reported that they are currently in love (37 percent of male students and 42 percent of female students). In addition, about a quarter of students reported that they had never been in love before and had only envisioned it (23 percent of male students and 25 percent of female students).

30 is not too late to get married

The survey shows that university students believe that the ideal age for marriage is 25 to 30 years old. The ideal age of marriage for female students is generally earlier: 52 percent of girls want to get married between 25 and 27 years old while only 38 percent of boys believe that range is best. 40 percent of male students believe the best age for marriage is from 28 to 30 years old. This is possibly because male students often have a “career first then marriage” mindset.

Around one third of college students look for love to combat loneliness

The survey shows that over 30 percent of college students surveyed want to fall in love in order to “pass the time” and “avoid loneliness.” The proportion of girls who answered this (37 percent) was slightly higher than the percentage of boys (33 percent). According to the results, only a quarter of college students, both men and women, date in the hopes of finding true love. Notably, 23 percent of male students and 16 percent of female students surveyed, said that love is important for meeting their “physical demands.”

Potential spouse’s character and personality most important

84 percent of male students and 90 percent of female students surveyed said that “personality and character” was the most important factor when looking for a potential spouse. The second most important characteristic was “values”, which was chosen by 59 percent of male students and 62 percent of female students. “Appearance” was more important to male students than female students and 51 percent of them marked it as an essential quality, while only 33 percent of female respondents thought it was essential.

Female students choose a number of factors in a higher proportion than male students including, “health and well-being,” (52 percent of female students marked this as important), “economic conditions,” (41 percent), “family background,” (36 percent), and “education,” (32 percent). The number of female students who selected “economic conditions” as an important criterion for marriage was 24 percentage points higher than the number of male students who chose it. This shows that female students are looking for spouses that are “high-quality across the board.” Perhaps this is the reason behind the stereotype that “leftover women have difficulty marrying.”
