A Bar Too High: Marriage Survey Shows Women Have Higher Standards Than Men

Editor’s note: This translated article introduces us to the results of a survey conducted by MyCOS educational survey company. The survey looked at the attitudes of university students in regards to love, sex and marriage. While many of the results are what you would expect, some may surprise you.

MyCOS educational survey company published an investigation on the concept of marriage amongst university students. The survey was distributed in February and the company received 2,012 responses. The survey shows that many parents, especially parents of female students, are more and more supportive of the idea of their children dating while in university. The idea of university in general has also changed; it has become a recognised milestone in children lives, as more parents attach the same importance to it as they do to marriage.

70 percent of college students have experienced love

About 70 percent of college students surveyed reported that they had experienced love (70 percent of male students and 67 percent of female students) and about 40 percent reported that they are currently in love (37 percent of male students and 42 percent of female students). In addition, about a quarter of students reported that they had never been in love before and had only envisioned it (23 percent of male students and 25 percent of female students).

30 is not too late to get married

The survey shows that university students believe that the ideal age for marriage is 25 to 30 years old. The ideal age of marriage for female students is generally earlier: 52 percent of girls want to get married between 25 and 27 years old while only 38 percent of boys believe that range is best. 40 percent of male students believe the best age for marriage is from 28 to 30 years old. This is possibly because male students often have a “career first then marriage” mindset.

Around one third of college students look for love to combat loneliness

The survey shows that over 30 percent of college students surveyed want to fall in love in order to “pass the time” and “avoid loneliness.” The proportion of girls who answered this (37 percent) was slightly higher than the percentage of boys (33 percent). According to the results, only a quarter of college students, both men and women, date in the hopes of finding true love. Notably, 23 percent of male students and 16 percent of female students surveyed, said that love is important for meeting their “physical demands.”

Potential spouse’s character and personality most important

84 percent of male students and 90 percent of female students surveyed said that “personality and character” was the most important factor when looking for a potential spouse. The second most important characteristic was “values”, which was chosen by 59 percent of male students and 62 percent of female students. “Appearance” was more important to male students than female students and 51 percent of them marked it as an essential quality, while only 33 percent of female respondents thought it was essential.

Female students choose a number of factors in a higher proportion than male students including, “health and well-being,” (52 percent of female students marked this as important), “economic conditions,” (41 percent), “family background,” (36 percent), and “education,” (32 percent). The number of female students who selected “economic conditions” as an important criterion for marriage was 24 percentage points higher than the number of male students who chose it. This shows that female students are looking for spouses that are “high-quality across the board.” Perhaps this is the reason behind the stereotype that “leftover women have difficulty marrying.”

How old is he and how to contact him ?! If he is that great, I don't care about his position or money...would like great husband that believes in real love, devotion and loyalty to his wife !

I know a good-looking Chinese man who is a manager at a local company. He tells me of his dates and girlfriends. Some of the demands he gets are truly ridiculous. Not so long ago he broke up with a girl who demanded he spend at least 100,000 on the wedding, plus the house and car. Another girl, who already owned a car, also wanted him to have a car so that he would not borrow hers. She earns half of what he does. We live in a town of less than 1,000,000 people! He is so fed up with this that he wants to date a foreign girl now. If any foreign girl is looking the guy is 1.80 m., speaks great English, and has a good job. Please send me a private message. He lives in southern Jiangsu by the way. P.S. He is a GREAT guy. I've known him for over two years now.

a marriage partner requires a bit more than the fact he is good-looking, 1.8 m., speaks English and has a good job. What you say are all superficial things. Credit foreign women with a bit more depth of character.

Chinese women like all women want the best possible partner. At age 23 they demand everything in a man: a) wealth b) stable employment or own business c) Own apartment d) A nice car e) Graduated from a top 10 school f) Parents with guan xi But is that girl somehow remains unmarried at age 29 her requirements change drastically: a) All for limbs intact b) Acceptable sperm count c) Willing to talk with her This is the reality of marriage in China from what I see.

Yeah, I see it exactly with one friend of my wife. The girl is 30 now and, honestly, i will not lean my bike on her... But, when they discuss about boys and things, she was very very mean and choosy/picky. Yet she suffer to find anyone. Since last year, family pushed her to find someone to marry, as time is ticking... They arranged meeting around CNY, they have some talk and next month they gonna marry. as you said, probably b) and c) are the most important things now.

Yes, I agree with the survey. But they forgot to add that 95% of them divorced or had extra marital affairs within the first 3 years of marriage. Of course women here have higher standards (demands, you mean?) when compared to men. What a joke of a survey!
