The pilot of a plane that crashed in 2010, killing 44 people has been sentenced to 3 years in jail Heilongjiang People’s Court ruled yesterday.

The Henan Airlines flight flight VD8387 from Harbin to Yichun crashed when it missed the runway during its descent into Yichun Lindu Airport causing 44 fatalities and 52 further injuries.

The plane caught fire upon landing leaving only 52 survivors.

The court found the pilot, Qi Quanjun, guilty of derelict of duty as he both failed to follow correct safety procedures for landing in low visibility conditions and didn’t evacuate the passengers correctly.

This is the first time that a pilot has been criminally charged and held responsible for a plane crash in China and thus has attracted a lot of attention from the media and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
