Over 2,800 students from Yangzhou Shuren Middle School received surprise hongbao on returning to school of March 2.
However, instead of traditional hongbao, which normally contain money, these hongbao offered candy, blessings and some unusual prizes, such as late passes, exam exemption certificates and the opportunity to eat lunch with their teachers.
Many netizens praised the prize giving as creative, but others were concerned that they would encourage bad habits among the students.
