This year, a new long-distance bus terminal located in the southern suburbs of Urumqi will be the first to implement the use of facial recognition technology in Xinjiang. A camera will take pictures of passengers when buying tickets. The picture has to match the customer's face when entering the station. Passengers will also have to show their identity card with their ticket in order to enter the waiting hall.
5,000 passengers use the bus station every day, and the station supports up to 1.4 million passengers during peak travel times.

I didn't have any problems travelling in Xinjiang just by showing my passport. If you can't pass the camera, there are cops, who can check your documents.
