Tianjin Entertainment Overview

Tianjin is a lively industrial town with a large expat community and a trendy local population. There's a great variety of pubs and clubs that cater to them. One of the best (and most expensive) is the Sunrise Club on Chongqing Road. My Disco on Anshan Road and Chat's Bar in the Hyatt are also worth a visit.

There's much more to do than drink in bars, too. Situated as it is on the junction of the Haihe River and the Bohai Sea, water sports like fishing and speed boating are immensely popular. And the city also has a number of well-equipped shooting ranges, where visitors can try out a pistol, a rifle, or even a machine gun.

There is a skating rink and a bowling center on the eleventh floor of the Isetan Department Store (Jili Dasha), open until midnight. There is also a golf course out towards the main port of Tanggu.

Festivals are also quite popular in Tianjin, and most are held on the city's Ancient Culture Street. The highly popular New Year Picture Festival is a celebration of the coming year, with displays of famous woodblock prints from Yangliuqing. Other festivals include the Rose Festival in May, the Great Wall Mountain Festival in autumn and the popular International Marathon on the first Sunday of every April. The street itself also often has displays of street art, Tianjin ballet, puppet shows and traditional opera.

Tianjin also boasts a number of local art forms, including Jingyun Dagu, and Tianjin Kuaiban. Traditionally, Tianjin Kuaiban is performed in the local dialect, where the performer (or performers) follows the rhythm by playing with two thin bamboo boards. Most of these art forms can be enjoyed in any of the theaters that dot the city.
