The Ultimate Retreat: Nanjing’s Sofitel Zhongshan Golf Resort

It is no wonder why the 140 rooms at the Sofitel Zhongshan Golf Resort in Nanjing (the first deluxe five-star golf hotel in Nanjing), are always so full. The management’s attention to detail, such as a candle placed romantically at the side of the bath, and great service ensures that guests always feel they are the hotel’s top priority. These reasons, coupled with their widely recognised golf courses, makes this resort one of the most sought after five-star hotels in Nanjing.

After a short drive from the Nanjing train station, heading towards the beautiful Purple Mountains (aka Zhongshan), our car turned off from the relaxing country road and into the gates of the resort. All around the grounds is an abundance of nature with the Purple Mountains shimmering in the near background. As the car pulled up to the impressive hotel façade, the able and eager bell hops approached to escort us out from the car and help with our bags.

Service and environment:

On the way to the check-in counter, the spacious, bright, and tastefully decorated lobby was complemented by the subtly softly-sweet fragrance which we were told was used by the hotel as a type of aroma therapy; rose was the fragrance du jour. Another welcoming surprise was the staff’s ability to offer their guests some simple pleasantries in French (Sofitel is a French company, after all) as well as being well versed in English.

Walking into the room was a real pleasure. One’s attention is immediately drawn to the large glass wall separating the main area from the washing area and closet, and then to the large balcony (standard with all the rooms) exposing impressive, unobstructed views of the beautiful Purple Mountains. The room also is equipped with all of the standard amenities expected from a resort of this caliber, including a large desk, small sofa, soft chairs, large bed with soft cotton sheets and several comfy pillows. Other conveniences include a flat screen TV, free wireless Internet and many more items too numerous to mention. Most impressive was the candle placed at the side of the extra-long sunken bath tub to help their guests create that very special moment.

Breakfast:

Using the Breakfast Order Card made ordering breakfast to the room for the following morning so convenient. All that I needed to do is check off my food choices on the card and place it on the room’s outside door knob. Room service then delivered the food, at the specified time, hot and fresh and just the way I like it! The presentation of the food on the trolley was as appetizing as the food was tasty; and the staff who delivered the food to the room was extremely courteous and helpful. I’m certain that the memories of relaxing in the plush cotton bathrobe while enjoying my morning coffee on the balcony with the sun beginning to peak its way out, revealing the majestic Purple Mountains, will stay with me for some time.

The golf courses:

One of the main aspects of this golf resort is naturally their golf course. This Sofitel resort offers two different golf courses. The 18-hole course is especially a pleasure and a great challenge. For those of us who can’t get enough time on the course during the day time, the 9-hole course has the convenient feature of being night-lit. Both courses were designed by golf pro Gary Player; the 18-hole course is on the competition circuit. Practice can also be found on their driving range, which I found very handy while I waited for my tee-time to arrive. Be sure to look into one of the resort’s “Exclusive Golf Packages” which offers special prices for combined hotel stay and golf time!

Dining options:

After a round of invigorating golf, we were prepared to load up on the abundant lunch buffet at Le Pavillon! There was fresh seafood and sashimi, antipastos and other cold appetizers, prepared hot foods, and fresh meats ready to be grilled on demand. In addition, there were plenty of enticing desserts and other fresh foods; guarantee that there is plenty for everyone to enjoy. For those who happen to miss the buffet or want something a little more specific, there is also ZiJin Court, which serves up fine Chinese cuisine, as well as Mezzeh for more of a European flair. Further relaxing can continue in one of the three bars and lounge areas to enjoy that perfect after-meal beverage.

If you are not inclined to get out onto one of the golf courses, the hotel is also equipped with many other indoor and outdoor amusements. Their splendid swimming pool is quiet, clean, and a glass ceiling that brings in lots of natural light. Other bonuses available to the guests are tennis courts, a children’s play area, as well as mahjong, billiards, a fitness area, spa, and more!

Being the golf lover that I am, I really look forward to my next visit to the Sofitel Nanjing Golf Resort when I’ll again have the opportunity to face their challenging golf course, enjoy their quality service and fine dining, and find comfort in their spacious rooms.
