The recently published "Survey on Shanghai's Image as an International City" shows that Shanghai, in the process of building its "Four Centres", is most highly regarded by the international community as a financial centre, then as an economic centre and trade centre.

This report drew its data from research conducted at the Institute of Arts and Humanities at Shanghai Jiaotong University, which surveyed 586 foreigners in Shanghai (hailing from 47 different countries on five continents). In total, after moving to Shanghai, 77.8% of the city's international community held a more favourable impression, and 92.9% of the respondents held a positive assessment of Shanghai's "city image".

The survey also found that the international community's perception of the city's "Four Centres" differed slightly: 78.9% regard Shanghai as a financial centre; 72.6% regard it as an economic centre; 68.1% regard it as a trade centre and 36% regard it as a shipping centre. Of the respondents, 34.3% believe that Shanghai's financial landmark is the Bund, as compared to 18.8% who believe that it should be Lujiazui, and nearly two-thirds of respondents said that they understood the historical background of the Bund. According to the last national census (2010), there are more than 140,000 foreigners living in Shanghai, more than in any other city in China.
