Smog and Masks Central in Beijing Marathon

Smog and Masks Central in Beijing Marathon
Oct 20, 2014 By eChinacities.com

On October 10, the 2014 Beijing Marathon started off at Tian’anmen Square, even though pollution levels were extremely high throughout the whole weekend as Beijing suffered under its second airpocalypse this month.

The marathon made headlines across the world, with pictures of runners wearing face masks going viral. There are reports of many runners pulling out before the race, or half way through, as a result of the pollution. There were allegedly calls to cancel or postpone the race, but that didn’t happen.

The winner of the marathon was Ethiopia’s Girmay Birhanu Gebru, who ran the entire marathon in just over two hours and 10 minutes.
