Shenzhen Government To Ban Sale of Electric Bikes

Shenzhen Government To Ban Sale of Electric Bikes
Oct 29, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Following Guangzhou’s lead, the Shenzhen police is hoping to ban the sale of electric bikes as they are deemed a danger and are causing increasingly more accidents on the road.

Shenzhen has approximately 500,000 electric bikes, the Shenzhen daily has reported, of which 80 percent do not meet national safety standards (maximum speed of 20 km/hr, weighing less than 40 kg). Some bikes are closer to 40 or even 50 km/hr, which makes them a danger to pedestrians, bicycles, and each other.

Last year, a total of 214 people were killed in accidents involving electric bikes, 60 percent of which were passengers.
