Shanghai is 10th Most Expensive City in the World for Expats

Shanghai has moved up four places to become the tenth costliest city in the world for expats to live in. Mercer’s 2014 survey of living standards around the world was released last week showing that Beijing is only slightly behind at eleventh place.

Shenzhen ranked at number 17, whilst Guangzhou ranked twenty fourth. The survey is designed to help multinationals determine compensation for expatriate employees and compares factors such as housing, transportation, food, clothing, household items and entertainment.

The two top ranking cities were both in African nations- Luanda in Angola and N’Djamena in Chad- came in first and second.

Analysts at the Mercer suggested that Chinese cities’ meteoric rise up the rankings in recent years is thanks to the strengthening of the RMB and the country’s ever growing housing costs.
