Shanghai has a fleet of at least 50,000 taxis. Visitors are advised that meter rates are significantly higher than those in other cities. The starting fare for Shanghai taxis is 14 Yuan (for the first 3 km, including a fuel surcharge of 1 RMB). After 3 km, passengers are charged 2.4 Yuan per km. Rides over 10 km are subject to a 50% added charge (Driving for about 5 minutes will take you 1 km). Night charges (23:00-5:00) are higher with taxis starting at 18 Yuan for the first 3 km and then 3.1 Yuan per km after that with rides over 10 km still subject to a 50% charge. Suburban taxis start at 12 RMB. Taxis do not charge for tolls on tunnels and bridges.?
Visitors should note that taxis are often more difficult to find in Shanghai than in other cities, especially during peak hours. It may be a good idea to call ahead to reserve a cab or to ask the hotel desk to call one for you.
