The Shanghai Metro system has introduced electronic ticketing machines that take change only, so visitors should carry plenty of change on them when planning to go out. The Shanghai subway system uses a ticket system through which different travel routes are priced according to distance. Besides Line 5 (Xinzhuang-Minhang Development Zone), all lines have the same pricing system.

A subway ride on Line 5 less than 6 km costs 2 RMB and trips that are 6-16 km cost 3 RMB. On all other lines, a ride shorter than 6 km costs 3 RMB, and trips that are 6-16 km cost 4 RMB, 16-26 km trips cost 5 RMB, 26-36 km trips cost 6 RMB, 36-46 km trips cost 7 RMB and 46-56 km trips cost 8 RMB. After 56 km, all rides cost 9 RMB.

Visitors staying in Shanghai for some time should purchase a Shanghai Public Transportation Card, or IC card. The card can be used on the Metro, on some public buses, ferries, and even taxis. An IC card costs 20 RMB. Visitors can recharge the cards at any designated Metro station, bus station, bank and store.
