Shanghai Named China’s Top City for Expats and Business

Shanghai has been named China’s top city for expats and business, followed by Guangzhou and Beijing.

Of 193,000 work permits given to foreigners in China in the last eight months, around a quarter (43,000) were given to expats living in Shanghai. The number is more than twice of the 21,200 given to expats in Beijing.

Guangzhou handed out the second most work permits at 33,000.

Beijing also found itself third after Shanghai and Guangdong in Forbes China’s annual list of the best Chinese cities for business.

This is, however, progress for Beijing, which came in seventh place in 2015 and fourth last year.

An annual survey of 20,000 China-based expats also voted Shanghai the country’s most attractive city for the seventh year in a row.
