During the three months following the Spring Festival holiday, round-trip flights from Shanghai to popular European destinations such as London, Paris, and Moscow cost roughly 5,000 RMB. Shanghai travellers heading to Lhasa, however, will need to fork out 5,880 RMB; round-trip flights to Urumqi are even more expensive at 5,960 RMB. Despite the distance being significantly further, many international flights are inexplicably less expansive than these domestic flights. Some netizens blame this price discrepancy on China’s domestic airline companies’ desire for higher profit.
