Sexist Beijing Government Poster Causes Controversy on Weibo
Apr 22, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A poster put up by Beijing's Xicheng District Civil Affairs Bureau has recently gone viral on Weibo. Netizens have accused the poster of being discriminatory against women.

On April 20, Netizen @ZhangXiaoXishuai published a photo of the Xicheng poster. The poster reads, “Being a good housewife and a good mother are a woman's greatest skills. Why must you exhaust everything to take jobs from men?” Yikes!

One Netizen responded to the poster, writing, “My life is free and for me. It is not necessary to be bound to a man or family. Men and family should not define a woman.”

At press time, the tweet with the poster has been reposted 34,000 times.

My wife is a CPA, top grad school grad, of a top 20 world ranking university. She thinks she would love to be a stay at home wife. You know why? Because she is a good woman. The fact is being a stay at home mom, and house wife isn't a low level job. It is one of the most important, and a good one can build great men & women for the future. There is a myth in the modern world that makes people slaves. That myth is that there should be two people with career jobs in a growing family, because it is good and equal. I think it is a great poster.

Westerners will laugh at this whilst many of them are only able to view women through the lense of porn. The hipocracy is breathtaking.

The 'West' has 2000+ years of various religions, from judeo-christianity to buddhism, as a spiritual counter-balance while PRC wiped off every single religion and flushed traditional chinese culture and values down the toilet with the cultural revolution, leaving no traces of ethics except CCP's guerilla warfare version. What's that, exactly? Look at the number of corrupted CCP members and compare that with Western administrations. Look at the number of bribes paying civilians in PRC and compare it with Western countries. Look at the number of bribes taking 'professionals', from accountants to medical doctors to teachers in PRC and compare that with Western countries. Look at the number of poisonous food and medicine and compare that with Western countries. Your ignorance is even more breathtaking.

Hey dude not sure how your point relates to the discussion but since you're on the topic of corruption and abuse of power, I would say westerners have as much to worry about...for starters the never ending banking scandals, the revolving door system between corporate boardrooms and government ministries, the selling off of publically owned assetts to pay for the private losses incurred by corrupt bankers / government officials, the continuous arming of dictators in the Middle East and Africa with lethal weapons of mass destruction....I could go on and on.

This is why China truly hates the west. Modern concepts that unbalance the already precarious harmony of a society that is struggling to catch up. Old values become totally indefensible, when there are countries out there that criminalize traditional sexism. I can sympathize from a larger point of view, but the reactions are too immature to rationalize. Always abusing and blaming minorities, women and children whenever they can't measure up. Typical chauvinism.

Wrong, the enemy is anyone who has something you want but can't have, which by definition is in a better position. It is a historical fact that Mao's CCP used guerilla warfare. Communists Vietcong also used guerilla warfare against US soldiers in Vietnam. "Guerillas need to be brave." Anyone fighting any war for whatever reasons needs courage, it is a minimum requirement. Confucius, born 551 BC (slightly before Socrates), was a philosopher and scholar. He was against wars and has nothing to do with Maoism or communism.

An insecure man will always fear the rise of a woman. The superior man will always support her and build her up so she can live up to her true potential.

An insecure man will always fear... common it is never true when people say, 'always'. An unemployed stoner with low self esteem is hoping his woman gets a great job so he can keep sponging. A man afraid of other men, will hope that have more power, so he never has to sharpen himself against other men. A superior man will 'always'... no way. superior men have affairs, and sleep with many women because women lust for superior men. Very PC...

Chairman Mao, he who did so much for gender equality in his time, he who enacted laws against gender discrimination, he who pushed forward for the female comrade to be equal with the male comrade, he who allowed Chinese women to work at the same positions men only were allowed to hold until then, he who outlawed the mistress culture, he who appointed the first ever female general in the world history, must be rolling in his crystal coffin, the "old habits" and "traditions" made a strong comeback after his death. We can reproach many things to Mao, but he truly fought for gender equality, as every comrades worth that name. He loved women, both in his bed and as equals to men.

It was outlawed back then, Mao saw "Chinese culture" as backward and barbaric, in some way he was right. It isn't outlawed anymore nowadays.

This coming from the city that hosted the Olympic Games. What a disgrace. China will never be a civilised country.
