These kinds of stories are always harrowing though it’s nice to know when the evildoers get what’s coming to them. During the early hours of an evening in December 2012, a woman by the name of Zhao Jie was on the way home from work in Beijing’s Fengtai District when she noticed someone was tailing her. After entering her neighborhood and nearing the stairs of her apartment block, a man wearing a facemask suddenly sprung out and grabbed her by the neck. With the other hand holding a knife, the man told her not to make a noise. The man then dragged Zhao to the back of a nearby public toilet and forced her to undress. After trying but failing to resist, Zhao managed to persuade the man to come back to her house as she was also afraid the freezing weather would have further adverse effects on her wellbeing.

Upon entering the house, the man held the knife at Zhao’s back and ordered her not to turn on any lights, after which he removed his facemask and put it across Zhao’s eyes. It was then that Zhao persuaded the man to wear a condom due to her being “worried about getting pregnant,” to which the man complied. After the ordeal was over, Zhao knew that the left behind condom was perfect evidence for tracking down the rapist, and subsequently contacted the police. During the investigation, the police found that several other women had been raped by a masked man in the same area between November and December 2012, and had also had their phones and money stolen.

On January 10 2013, police (who were also wearing facemasks) rode bikes into a nearby road south of where the rapes had taken place, and tracked down the suspect, a 37 year-old unemployed man from Harbin named Han. It was discovered that of all the victims who were raped, Zhao Jie was the only one who obtained evidence in the form of the suspect’s semen due to the other victims showering immediately after their ordeals. Han initially denied that he had any part to play in the crimes, though after the police checked CCTV tapes of the local neighborhood and performed a DNA test, Han was unable to deny the crimes any further. Recently, Han is facing charges for suspected robbery and rape, and is under the custody of the Fengtai People’s Procuratorate.
