Scooter License Plates a Legal Requirement from September: Good News Is, They’re Free!
Jun 20, 2014 By eChinacities.com

From September 1, owners of scooters and mopeds must have a license plate in order to keep riding in the city.

There are currently around 5 million scooters and mopeds in Shanghai, but only 1.69 million have been legally registered. A fine between 50 and 200 RMB will be imposed for driving without a license plate from the beginning of September.

The plates-which you can get free of charge- are being introduced as part of the city’s plan to phase out unapproved scooter models. It’s still unclear whether or not this will affect the proposed city wide ban on gas scooters, announced earlier this year.

The Municipal Public Security Bureau has set up license plate application centers in 150 locations around the city. The locations can be viewed on www.shbicycle.com, although for now the information is only available in Chinese.

All you need to do is bring proof of purchase of the vehicle and a form of ID to one of the application centers, to receive your free license plate.
