Many parts of northern China were affected by sandstorms that occurred on March 9, slowing down transportation in their wake. Billboards were reported to have collapsed on roads, causing countless disruptions along major highways and inner-city streets. Sea transport was also affected by the hazardous weather; services sailing between Yantai, Shandong to Dalian were suspended temporarily. In many parts of Gansu Province, visibility was reduced to less than 400 m, while the situation in Ningxia was even more serious, where visibility was reported to be down to less than 50 m. The sandstorms also reportedly affected parts of Japan, such as Nagoya and Kyoto.
