Results of a recent opinion poll in Russia asking citizens about Russia’s relationship with other countries found that the majority believe that China is among Russia’s closest allies at the moment, whilst America is the biggest enemy. Belarus and Kazakhstan were also rated as allies of Russia.

Russia’s Satellite News Network posed the questions “Which countries have the most friendly relationship with Russia?” to its readers. 51 percent of the 1,600 respondents said that China has a friendly relationship with Russia. This number has tripled since 2008 when only 23 percent of respondents held this view.

Germany’s position in the poll has also changed. In 2008, 17 percent of participants believed that the country had a friendly relationship with Russia. In this most recent survey however, this number has dropped to 2 percent.

32 percent of respondents also described Russia’s relationship with Ukraine as ‘extremely tense’.
