Reports of a “sex slave” case in Shenzhen went viral on March 10, shocking China’s netizens. Several days earlier on March 7, a user named “cwjhbfye” posted an account of middle-aged woman who’d witnessed a young girl emerge from a building in her community naked and bleeding on February 28.

According to the woman, the girl came out of the apartment building at around 17:00 with her hands chained, mouth bleeding and mostly naked, shouting for help. Soon after, the police arrived and blockaded the scene around the apartment building. From inside the house they brought out some sort of dog cage and a blanket. Later reports stated that the girl was only 17 years old and had been locked inside the cage in a room in the basement of the apartment building, likely being held as a sex slave. She’d managed to escape by opening the crate with her teeth. Police have sealed off the building.

The renter of the room, surnamed Chen, was previously arrested for lewd acts in public and was just released about a year ago. The suspect is about 40 years old, had previously studied abroad in Japan, and may have a Ph.D. He apparently got to know the victim online. Chen is wanted for illegal detention and rape, but is still currently at large.
