A man, who disrupted Shanghai Metro services when he jumped onto the tracks and threatened to kill himself, has been sentenced to nine months in jail.

Tang, a 36 year old former chef, is an alcoholic and gambling addict, and had decided to take his own life after losing a large amount of money through online gambling.

On the morning of February 21, Tang got very drunk and bought a kitchen knife after getting into an argument in an internet café. He then entered Songjin Metro station, jumped onto the tracks and began walking into the tunnel. How he was able to bypass security with a kitchen knife, remains unclear.

When metro staff and police attempted to negotiate with him he held the knife to his throat and threatened to kill himself. The standoff lasted for an hour before police persuaded Tang to put down the knife.

Line 3 services were disrupted for around an hour.

"How he was able to bypass security with a kitchen knife, remains unclear." Because the security wasn't doing its job... not that unclear. Go to any train station and see how they wave you in no matter if the metal detector goes off, all the while the guards are playing on their phones.

Actually i didn't even notice any metal detector. I thought the only checking was the x ray machine and the checking totally depends on people's willingness to put their bag in.

I just thought it was strange now he clearly had access to online gambling (which maybe wasn't blocked, yet is illegal in China)... yet Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Dropbox, Instagram... et al are such HUGE threats and blocked for basically NO clear reason... China's priorities are totally screwed up.
