Please, No Momo’s Today: Where to Get Lhasa’s Best Foreign Food

Lhasa can feel really far from home, and whether you are passing through or staying for a longer time, a good break in the routine of traveling can be a taste of home. These are some of the best restaurants in Lhasa that serve exclusively Western food, or have a good selection of it on their menu. Some of them also have Tibetan fare, so in case you find yourself in a difficult group, there is something for everybody, in no particular order.

1) Deleg Coffee

Deleg Coffee is a typical European café in the center of Lhasa, located at a hotel entrance. It has very good coffee, and the staff is attentive, speak English, and will try to help you with any questions you have, whether it be about the menu or a travel-related issue. The food is also worth going for, as they serve a lot of European-inspired snacks, including German style curry sausage, pizza, fries, and they even have cake (the owner spent some time in Europe). This café is also a great place to meet other travelers if you want to do so.

2) Dunya Restaurant

Dutch-owned and run, Dunya Restaurant offers one of the best Western food options in Lhasa, albeit also slightly more pricy than the other options. They serve pizza, pasta, salads and sandwiches, making it the perfect option for a change from the Tibetan food, or if you’d rather have something lighter and more familiar for lunch. The balcony is perfect for people-watching and relaxing, and the restaurant is very centrally located. There is also a hostel attached to the restaurant and a travel agency, check out the website for more details and their other services.

3) House of Shambhala Restaurant

Full of choices for everyone, House of Shambhala is a good break for weary travelers. Not only is it a comfortable restaurant, but the views of Lhasa are great too. Make sure you take the time to find it though, as it is not super easy to find and may require asking for some directions, but the climb is worth it once you see the views. There is a selection of Indian, Chinese, Tibetan and Nepali food, and there are plenty of vegetarian options too, which can be a god-send for vegetarians amidst all the yak dishes.

4) Snowlands Restaurant

Serving Tibetan, Nepali and Chinese food, Snowlands Restaurant is a must for anyone who is craving Western style desserts. There is a lot to choose from, including cheesecake, black forest cake, amongst others. Allegedly visitors flock here just for the cake – which seems random but be thankful! The food is also good here, and the location at the center of the city alone is worth a visit.

5) The Summit Café

This popular backpackers’ location is a popular joint for the whole lot: drinks, atmosphere, food. Although it looks like a Starbucks rip off, the coffee is still good, which is surprising and rare in this location. The food is mainly western, although there is still a lot of Yak on the menu, and the type of food is what you’d expect from a café; pizza, burgers, salads, pasta, etc. Even the cakes are good quality and taste like home. There are a few different branches throughout the city, all of which are staffed by friendly and helpful Tibetan staff. There are a lot of travelers and foreigners at every branch so this is also a good place to meet people.

The widely varied menu means that this place is perfect for a group of friends or large family with a big taste disparity.
