Ding, a 30-year-old a Nanjing native, works in the sales department for a local company. For years now, his job has entailed frequent business trips which has severely hindered his opportunities to find a steady girlfriend. Worried that at this rate his son would never marry, Ding’s father recently paid a matchmaker 1,000 RMB to help find his son a suitable girlfriend.
Shortly after, during the Chinese New Year holiday, the matchmaker called Ding’s father up to tell him that he’d found his son a pretty 26-year-old girl named Xiao Yue. She was also from Nanjing, worked for a local company and people often commented on her beauty. Ding’s father was excited about this prospect and promptly set his son up on a blind date with Xiao Yue. Upon meeting each other the two realized that they already knew each other, sort of: Ding was a former client of Xiao Yue’s in the brothel where she once worked. Both embarrassed by the situation, neither of them said a word, hoping that they could eventually part ways in silence.
However, the matchmaker insisted that the two were a suitable match, going so far as to set up a meeting between them and their parents. The meeting went well for both sets of parents. Ding’s father basically demanded that Ding continue seeing this girl and that he would eventually marry her. After being told this, Ding told his father the truth about his previous relations with Xiao Yue during her time as a prostitute. Upset and angry, Ding’s father tracked down the matchmaker and demanded a refund. Little did he know that Xiao Yue was the daughter of one of the matchmaker’s close friends and that he’d had no idea about her previous employment either. With the help of a legal mediator, both parties eventually reached an agreement, with the matchmaker refunding Ding’s father the 1,000 RMB.
