Online Sellers Can be Fined 500,000 RMB for Refusing Refunds

New rules regulating online shopping have been put into place, meaning online vendors can be fined up to 500,000 RMB for refusing to refund unwanted goods.

Last year, new laws stating that consumers have the right to return goods within seven days for any reason came into effect. Since then, the number of complaints from consumers has increased significantly; many have reported that vendors had changed the conditions of the return policy themselves, or outright refused to refund items.

Furthermore, the Secretary-General of the City Consumers’ Association Deng Guoping, said that the complaints received were just the tip of the iceberg, as most customers will choose to stay silent.

The new rules were introduced this week, although they don’t extend to every item; perishables, customized items, items which have had the packaging removed and several digital items aren’t eligible for refund.

Now, why don't they impose the same rules for brick and mortars? Have ever tried to exchange a defective item to the store? Nightmare.
