Now Open: Affordable Dining Options in Beijing’s Sanlitun

Although the Village in Sanlitun Beijing is becoming outrageously expensive, never fear for meal deals are here. Below are some of the best New Openings in terms of quality and affordability the Village has to offer.

The Orient Kitchen – Established QualityView In Map
The Orient Kitchen is a two storey delight of Asian cuisine done the right way. Its timeless natural dark wood interior is separated by a central staircase which leads up to a no less charming upper level and outside seating area. Having been open two months short of a year, this restaurant is always choc-o-bloc with hungry customers, and it is no wonder given the quality and variety of the dishes on offer.

The food presented is an oriental fusion from Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore. The menu is extensive and offers great variety. The grouper and Hainan chicken rice are popular favourites which see people coming back again and again. The marinated beef cubes and pepper roasted potato pieces are also a delight for the mouth. The drinks menu boasts a large variety of hot and cold herbal teas and fruity mixtures, which although are not for everyone certainly add to the vibrancy of the menu. Although the staff don’t speak much English, they are very prompt and friendly and altogether give the finishing touch to a top quality eatery.

Flamme – Tasteful ClassView In Map
Flamme is an American style steak house run by an all Chinese cast. Only recently opened, now is a good time to take advantage of their promotional deals (50 RMB all you can drink beer). The menu is conservative but does have a very nice 'sides' section. Try the succulent baby yellow potatoes or the matchstick fries, which although rather cumbersome to get into the mouth are most welcome once there. The steak meat is both imported and local, and generally of a high quality.

Flamme's outdoor terrace is one of the best in Sanlitun because it catches the cool breeze and also boasts a swinging chair which seems to be quite popular with Chinese couples (although best to avoid if you want to make the meal a lasting one). The great thing about this place is that the staff are very enthusiastic and seem to love their job which obviously rubs off on the customer, so altogether a very enjoyable experience.

The Stumble Inn - BeertasticView In Map
This latest two storey addition to the Sanlitun Village complex brings beer, cider and even ale to the Beijing Expats and western wannabes. Having only been in operation for less than a month, there are some super drinks deals that should definitely be used and abused. Happy hour 2 for 1 on selected drinks runs everyday from 3-9pm and in addition there are daily deals including Wicked Wednesday's and TFI Friday's. They also serve a very reasonably priced menu of pub grub which goes down a treat when paired with one of the 101 beer/ales/ciders on offer. Recommended is the messy burger, which piles in such a huge dollop of freshly cooked ingredients that you may require a bib (available on request) in order to save that office shirt from certain disaster.

Downstairs there are high seated low backed bar stools for boozing and plazma screen gazing. While the upstairs is dominated by a red felt bedecked pool table and a 'very British' darts board. Outside is a multilevel terrace which has just acquired several gazebo-like tents to try and ward off the evil Apple logo of Sanlitun. Do not forget to sign up for the World Beer Club Challenge.

The Butcher Steakhouse – Charmingly RusticView In Map
Situated on the corner of Dongzhimen Outer Street and North Sanlitun Street this butcher/steakhouse is slightly off the beaten track. It offers a great selection of imported meats and butcher-related tasty treats at rather expensive prices. The restaurant itself is very rustic in terms of what's on offer and service. There is no drinks menu at the time of writing and the food menu is quite limited. The burger was very tasty but the sausage 'platter' consisted of just two sausages which had an odd soft and soggy texture. The menu also lacked any real side dishes which is a must for a steakhouse. Having said that, they are currently slashing the bill in half every Monday which makes it very cheap. The staff, although very friendly were a little over eager and clumsy but good fun nonetheless. It offers a very nice space with a small ground floor terrace, upper level balcony and indoor dining hall with rustic, solid fixtures and fittings. The selling point is of course the 1000g burger challenge which has still not yet been completed. So if you're feeling starved and short of cash take three hours out of your day to munch down 1KG of prime beef with all the trimmings.
