Economic Overview
Nanjing has been a center of trade and commerce since ancient times. Its position as a major port city along several important Yangtze trade routes has served it well for centuries, and today its location at the intersection of three major railway lines in the booming Yangtze delta continues to facilitate its growth. Unbleached cotton cloth was once Nanjing's primary export, but the city's locally-manufactured products have now expanded to include electronic and electromechanical products, computer technology, petrochemicals, vehicles and automotive products, textiles and clothing and more. In terms of the modern economy, Nanjing is a city on the upswing, and is rapidly becoming a key industrial and communications center. Massive State-owned enterprises Jincheng Motors, Nanjing Steel and Panda Electronics are all headquartered in Nanjing. In 2006 it ranked 20th in the comprehensive competitiveness list of Chinese cities, and has won a series of titles, including ''Model City of Scientific And Technological Advancement,'' ''Top Tourist City,'' and ''National-Level Garden City,'' and ranks in the forefront of China's ''50 Excellent Cities'' in comprehensive strength.
Nanjing is receiving increasing attention from foreign investors, and several major international firms have already set up shop within the city limits. According to some estimates, an average of two new foreign firms establish offices in the city every day. Nanjing is also home to several government-sponsored industrial parks, including Gaoxin, Xingang, Huagong and Jiangning.
More than a few major research institutions have established themselves in the region. Scientists and researchers at the Nanjing University of Technology, Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and the Jinling Institute of Technology are making rapid advancements in their respective fields. There are currently 18 key laboratories, 5 State-level labs and 10 engineering research centers located here, with 1,800 patents granted to Nanjing scientists and inventors in 2003 alone.
Nanjing's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 277.4 billion RMB in 2006, up by 15.1 percent over the previous year, while GDP per capita was up 10.9 per cent to 39,379 RMB. Nanjing boasts a financial and commercial network that is developing at breakneck speeds. There are already over 80,000 commercial service centers, 550 markets and 1,000 major banking branches in the area. In 2006, revenue from consumer product sales reached an astounding RMB 116.7 billion, an increase of 16.1% from the previous year.
