Economic Overview

Nanchang; literally translated as "Southern Prosperity", is a highly productive area in the fertile Gan Jiang River Basin, which has been populated since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). The city is now the technological, educational and cultural center of Jiangxi Province with its history of over 2,200 years giving it deep cultural roots. Nanchang is also renowned as the revolutionary citadel of the Red Army. It has been awarded the titles of ''National Civilized City'', ''Advanced City'' and ''Outstanding Tourism City in China.''

Once most famous for its merchants, alchemists and tea, the city remains an important farming area for grains, edible-oils, meats, milk, aquatic products (from the river and the nearby Poyang Lake) and vegetables. Nanchang is also the largest industrial city in Jiangxi, where the first plane, first tractor, first motorcycle and first coastal defense missile in New China were produced. Now it is an important base for modern manufacturing industries and has 11 high quality industrial parks to service the requirements of both foreign and domestic investors.

In 2006, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nanchang was 118.5 billion RMB, up by 15.2 percent over the previous year and GDP per capita was 26,145 RMB, ranking Nanchang 51st among its mainland peers. In the year 2006, the total sum of fixed capital investment reached 64.2 billion RMB.

In 2006, the economic contribution ratio to GDP of the primary industries including agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and the fisheries was 6.5%; the contribution ratio of the secondary industries including manufacturing and the value added sector was 54.4% and that of the tertiary industries was 39.1%.

Foreign Trade Overview
Nanchang's total import/export volume was US$2.45 billion in 2006, up by 42.6% over the previous year, with total exports reaching US$1.24 billion and total imports of US$1.21 billion. The export volume of foreign-invested companies was US$229 million and Nanchang's major export trade markets were Asia, North America and the EU including over 60 nations and regions. Major exports include textiles and garments, medical equipment, hi-tech products and electro-mechanical products. Textiles and garments are traditional exports of Nanchang with an export volume of US$233.2 million, accounting for 18.8% of the city's total export volume in 2006. The export of hi-tech products and electro-mechanical products increased by a whopping 255.7% year-on-year to US$197.34 million.

Foreign Trade and Cultural Ties
By the end of 2006, Nanchang had established trade and business relationships with over 60 countries and regions and is also twinned with Skopie city in Macedonia, Toluca city in Mexico, Takatsu and Kagawa-ken cities in Japan and Valkeakoski and Tojiala cities in Finland. Since 1984, Jiangxi Province has also built friendly province-state relationships with Hessen in Germany, the States of Kentucky and Utah in the USA, Gifu-ken and Okayama-ken in Japan and Jaroslavl' Obl in Russia and has signed more than 130 economic, cultural, educational exchange and cooperation contracts with them.
