Myanmar Grants Amnesty to 155 Chinese Jailed for Illegal Logging

Myanmar has granted amnesty to and released 155 Chinese citizens arrested for illegal logging from Myanmarese prison. President Thein Sein signed an amnesty decree today releasing 6,966 prisoners including the convicted Chinese nationals.

The Chinese Embassy in Myanmar reported that most of the 155 imprisoned Chinese citizens had been arrested for illegal logging. 150 of the prisoners had been sentenced to 20 years in jail for illegal logging, while two minors were serving a 10 year sentence. One other released Chinese national had been imprisoned for trafficking and was serving 35 years.

The Chinese nationals imprisoned for illegal logging had been sentenced by a court in Myitkyina last week.
