Two child beggars attracted the concern of passengers on the Nanjing metro last week. A young boy and girl begged for change on Nanjing's Line 2. The boy sang the Chinese children's song, “In This World Only Mother is Good,” while the girl kowtowed to passengers.

Passengers worried that the two children had been trafficked and were being forced to beg. When one passenger asked the children for their names, they did not answer, but continued to robotically sing.

Nanjing police in charge of metro security saw the story online and began an investigation. The next morning, the two children were spotted again on the metro, this time on the city's Airport Line. Metro police found the children and brought them into the security office.

Police found out that the children's mother was from Minxian, Gansu, and was extremely young. Law enforcement officers stipulated that their mother had been born in 1996, making her only 19 years old.

The Nanjing metro is often dotted with “professional” beggars, mostly from Minxian. In this case, the children's mother took her children on a “begging tour,” to the city. Police say that “professional” beggars can easily earn 400 to 500 Yuan per day, and over 10,000 Yuan per month.

Child beggars are often part of a “professional” begging ring. In a begging ring, the leaders generally hold onto a child's identity card and birth certificate and do not let them carry more than 100 Yuan in cash. The cash they earn while begging is quickly handed over to the leaders of the group.
